Flat, heeled or platform?

Flat sandals are the everyday choice: thong styles for the beach, double-strap slides for errands, and gladiator or ankle-strap designs for a dressier flat. Heeled sandals in a 5–8 cm block heel are the most comfortable way to dress up for dinner. Platform sandals give height without the pitch of a stiletto and suit wide-leg trousers and maxi dresses.

Colours and materials

Tan and black leather sandals are the year-round staples. White sandals brighten summer outfits and photograph beautifully. Gold and silver sandals do the work of jewellery on an evening look. Look for smooth calfskin for structure, suede for softness and patent for shine.

Fit notes

Sandals have no give at the heel, so order your usual size unless the product page notes otherwise. Strappy styles with buckles are the most adjustable. If you are between sizes in a slide, size up.
